18 Before 2018 - Ending The Year Strong Challenge
I don’t do New Year resolutions. They never really work anyway and only add up stress and disappointment a few months into the New Year.
I prefer intentions. Yet still, at the end of every year, I do find myself looking back and wondering, reflecting on what I did, how I felt, what I liked, what I learned and although I try to focus on all the good things that the ending year provided me with. The inevitable creeping in of wishes and plans that did not happen raises its head to remind me of what I didn’t. Not a nice feeling.
This year, I’ve decided to tackle this little monster with a new tactic after seeing a post by Kara Benz that inspired me to join her challenge.
I’ve created a list of 18 things I would like to do / create / experience / accomplish before 2018 and I’m challenging YOU to come and play along.
The How To
First, I did rapid log, which is a bullet journal-inspired list of goals to be completed, known as a 'brain dump'. I listed everything that came up in my mind to accomplish in the next few months and before the end of the year. I basically just ‘dumped’ it on paper which I later ‘embellished’ to look a little to make it a tad nicer to look at. This will hang up next to my computer and where I can see it as a reminder and help me keep focused.
While brainstorming, I focusing on a few things few things:
- What projects have I been procrastinating on this year?
- What areas of my life do I want/need to improve?
- What would make me feel like 2017 was an absolute success?
Then, I organized those eighteen main intentions to carry out. I split them into two groups; Personal, and Work.
You can see both images of my journal pages and my 'brain dump' above and below
My embellished 'Brain Dump'
It’s not a list of big bold things. It’s not a resolution thing. It’s just a reminder of some small intentions of things that will support me in feeling even better about this year. After all, it’s the small stuff that makes our everyday, and that’s what I’m focusing on.
Here are a few more questions and things to consider to help you get started:
1. What projects have you been procrastinating on?
2. What areas of your life do you want to improve?
3. What would make you feel like 2017 was a good and successful year?
4. What would you like to clear out of the way before the end of the year that will help you feel positive and inspire / energize you into the beginning of next year?
5. What unfinished business would you like to focus on so you can end this year with a clean slate?
6. Which ventures need more research, or simply let go of, so you can make room for more of what you want to enter your life?
7. What or whom do you need to say “no” to right now?
8. What or whom do you need to say “yes’ to right now?
9. Which people, activities and events do you want to be present for with the rest of 2017?
10. What would have to happen in this last few months to make 2017 feel like a Great year?
Here is what's on my list:
# 1 Spend more time in Nature I can never have too much time in nature. I haven’t taken much advantage this summer of the outdoors and I really want to have a few more nature adventures before it gets too cold.
# 2 Read a novel (not work related reading) Yes, I’m always reading / listening to books. Usually a few at a time. But they are always related to my work and as much as I love reading them and learning even more. It’s been ages since I dived myself and my imagination in a fiction novel / another world to immerse myself in as a fun little brain escape from the chatter of the world.
# 3 Return to Ballroom dancing I had to stop this hobby of mine almost a year ago due to a frozen shoulder. It’s taking forever to heal, and I probably will have some limitations getting back to it. But dancing is such an uplifting, feel good, energizing and somewhat of a workout for me and not being able to do it has had its effects both on my spirit and body. And although it will probably be a little hard to return to (do I remember the steps?) I would really like to at least try, and perhaps slowly bring dance back to my life.
# 4 Launch my new ‘Procrastination Buster’ online course I’m almost done with all the aspects of creating this course and getting it ready to birth out into the world. I’m soooooo excited about it! I’m also a little scared about it. Launching something that comes from the heart and hoping it will resonate and help other people, wanting it to be inspiring and succeed in what my intention is creating an emotional pressure that has the potential of creating a ‘procrastination distraction’ (yes, how to deal and overcome that is all in my course, and I am using my own tools here).
# 5 Write a monthly blog I’ve been totally slipping away from that this year and I really want to get back to writing a monthly blog and maintaining consistency. Planning ahead and writing in advance instead of waiting for the last minute will be helpful and feels like a good way to go about it.
# 6 Learn and create funnels for my website that every time I approach I get overwhelmed and leave it for later. However, it’s an important part for taking my business into the next level and have a better strategy. I want to do it. I’m ready to do it. I can do it. So I will do it . All I need is to start…
# 7 Re vamp my winter wardrobe What girl doesn’t want to stay both warm and fashionable in the winter?
# 8 De clutter Yup, a frozen shoulder can contribute to clutter and now that I’m healing, I am ready to put it behind and make my space more the way I like to be. It’s my peaceful haven, my place for myself away from the world, my little cocoon of me inspiring and loving me.
# 9 Create a new social strategy for my business Simply putting it - Having a plan will make it easy to follow and make my dreams and wishes come true. After all, I am creating the life that I want for myself. And a plan is a road map of the best path to the places I want to go
# 10 Go to more networking events I’m more of an introvert and networking events tend to feel a little uneasy for me. Going to more events will help me both practice getting more comfortable in these events, and make nice connections with likeminded people. It’s a win win situation.
# 11 Create at least one more podcast I so enjoyed doing my first podcast and the responses were wonderful. Bringing inspiring stories of others to share with the world is a privilege.
# 12 Have a professional photo shoot Since I’m re designing and branding my website, a set of new professional pictures will help elevate it.
# 13 Have a Spa day Self-love and self-care is the nourishment I need so that I have what to give to others. When I am filled from the inside, I can give so much more to others.
# 14 Make videos for my ChArt online course
Elevating, improving, adding value and making it more personable to the course participants. I want them to have the best experience possible as they learn to take steps to create a better life for themselves.
# 15 Buy a new sofa Well, this one is quite overdue. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it, buy my lovely 17 year old cat has been sharpening his nails on this sofa for years and it’s ripping up in many places. It’s time
# 16 Finish new website design This is such a task of long labor and so many choices and possibilities and decisions to make. I’m slowly getting there and would love to be done and moving on from that before the end of the year.
# 17 Practice my calligraphy
My handwriting is pretty awful. Especially when I write fast which is usually when I get a great idea and want to write it down quickly and my brain is moving 1000 times faster than my hands. The results? I have such a hard time reading my own great ideas and deciphering my notes.
# 18 Plan a winter getaway weekend Every year I want to run away from the cold new York winter and every year I don’t. This year, if I plan it ahead of time I will be able to take a break from winter and feed my soul and body with the warmth of the sunshine and bright light.
18 Before 2018 - my personal and business intentions / challenge
I have to admit that many of the things on this list are already in the process of happening and will surely make the deadline way before the mark of the end of the year, but as I mentioned above, it’s more about ending the year with a feeling of accomplishment as clean a slate as possible (without getting stressed out about it).
Other things on the list feel a bit more challenging and daunting and all together a bit overwhelming by the amount of what it will take to make them happen.
At the same time, there is also an excitement that comes along with it. I’m eager to see what I can create from the list and how it will pan out.
Weather I manage to do it all or not is not the issue.
It’s the focused and deliberate intention that makes me feel inspired and excited.
I still feel that with this list, at the end of the year I will be able to look back and say – I made things happen!
